Here are three facts to note about abortion.

1. Abortion Is a Medical Procedure.

Abortion, whether through drugs (often called the abortion pill) or a surgical procedure, is a serious medical procedure. Like most medical procedures, it carries potential risks and side effects. These risks can vary based on how far along the pregnancy is, the method used, and a woman’s overall health, allergies, and medical conditions.

2. There Are Possible Physical Risks.

Both medical and surgical abortions cause vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping, though on very different scales.

Medical Abortion Risks

Medical abortion works to end and expel the pregnancy by first blocking the hormone progesterone with the drug mifepristone. Then, after about 24-48 hours, misoprostol is taken to cause the uterus to contract (leading to abdominal cramping) and expel the pregnancy through intense vaginal bleeding. Blood clots up to the size of a lemon are considered normal during this procedure.

In some cases, heavy and prolonged bleeding may require additional medical attention. There is also a risk of infection, fever, incomplete abortion, and digestive system discomfort.

An incomplete abortion may occur and could require additional treatment. Though uncommon, surgical procedures can sometimes cause injury to the cervix or uterus, and some women experience reactions to medications or anesthesia. These are all important things to know when making an abortion decision.

Surgical Abortion Risks

Surgical abortion happens in a clinic or hospital setting. An abortion provider dilates the cervix using either drugs or surgical instruments. Then, they will manually remove the pregnancy using a mixture of surgical instruments and suction to scrape and empty the uterus.

The risks include poking a hole in the uterus with a surgical instrument, damage to the cervix, infection, and scar tissue on the wall of the uterus.

After a surgical abortion, women can experience mild spotting or light vaginal bleeding and cramping that lasts a few days.

3. There Are Emotional and Psychological Considerations.

Emotional responses to abortion vary widely. Some women feel relief, while others experience sadness, grief, or mixed emotions that may appear weeks or months later.

Factors such as personal beliefs, life circumstances, and support systems can influence emotional well-being. Having access to compassionate care and support can make a meaningful difference.
